- Isle of the Dead Holiday Card By Andrew Cranston Digitally printed Size - 5 x 7inches Edition of 300 Not for sale Artist's Statement: I like artists’ ephemera: Paul Klee’s puppets, Picasso’s napkin drawings, Peter Doig’s film posters, di- versions from an artist’s main work. My own release is making birthday or Christmas cards for friends and family. I have fun and do things I find harder to allow myself in my ‘serious’ painting practice. I can use all sorts of imagery and text, I can be jokey and silly, totally free even. Maybe I’m a frustrated graphic designer really. I’ve long had a fascination with Arnold Bocklin’s paintings of the Isle of the Dead. I love the whole mood of it and singular white tone of the perfectly placed ferryman. It occured to me to put Christmas baubles and lights on the fir tres in the picture, to lift the gloominess and lighten the passage across the river Styx on a bleak winters day. - Andrew Cranston, November 2025 |
